Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States and is so big that there are several marinas located on it. There are many great water activities you can particpate in on Lake Mead from swimming, water skiing, boating and exploring. It is located on the Colorado River and is about 30 miles outside of Las Vegas. There are quite a few hotels to stay along Lake Mead but one of the favorite things for visitors is to rent a houseboat and sleep and enjoy the lake on that for a few days. After spending time on the Lake, don’t forget to see the Hoover Dam as it is fascinating to see up close and Lake Mead was made by the Hoover Dam.

Another fantastic outdoor area to see is called the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Park and is somewhat closer to downtown Las Vegas as it is only 15 miles away. The highest point in this park is called La Madre Mountain and is 8154 feet high. As you enter the park, there is a visitor center and it is recommended to stop in there initially to get a trail map and perhaps a few helpful tips from a ranger on the different activities here.

Hiking is obviously a favorite activity at Red Rocks as is biking. Many people cycle on the loop road on their bikes is a one way loop that takes you through some beautiful scenery. Rock climbing is also a great activity to do here and if you want to stay in the outdoors, they also have camping available.

Vegas has become a favorite place to host triathlons of every distance. The perfect year round climate, the access to Lake Mead and the fun of Las Vegas draw many triathletes here to compete in a race.
